The other day I was looking for a company to print our business cards. I pulled up Google and typed in “Business Cards.” I got over 1b search results. YIKES! I started filtering down my search by adding my city to the search and my results went down to 300k. I then kept going into the search and typing in a variety of terms till I finally found what I was looking for.
Websites have many components that determine how you are found in search engines. One of the most important pieces is Keywords. Picking the right keywords will determine not only IF you come up in searches, but on which page of the search. To pick the right keywords for your website, you need to consider several things:
Relevance:
Your business has terms that are commonly used by customers to find or describe your service or product. The best way to find out how your customer describes your type of business is to talk to them. Listen to the keywords or phrases they are using to describe your business. It is important that when you pick your keywords to select them based on the relevance and importance of how customers will find you, not internal jargon you may use.
Competitors:
More then likely, you have competitors and they have a website. If your competitors are showing higher in search results, you should look into what keywords they are using. The easiest way to find their keywords is to look at the source of the page and search for the tag”<meta name=”keywords” content=”. In this tag you should find all their keywords for that particular page. Look through their keywords and apply those to your website that will help drive traffic.
Short Phrases:
The best Keywords are short, no longer then 3 words. In the example above we did our search based on a short phrase “Business Cards” that is descriptive but to the point. Try to keep your keywords limited to 10-15 unique words or phrases to get the best results.
Stay Current:
By all means, picking keywords isn’t a one-time deal where you do it once, and you are done for the life of your website. Check your keywords every few weeks or months and see what works, and what doesn’t. If certain keywords aren’t producing any results for your website, change them.
