You’ve decided to build a website, now how are you going to drive traffic to your website? Many years ago businesses relied on advertising, like the Yellow Pages to bring business in the door. Now it’s about getting traffic to your site and how easy can you be found online.
Let’s start by focusing on these 5 tips to help you drive traffic your website.
1. Get noticed by search engines
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) improves your chances of someone finding your website through a search engine, like Google or Bing. The idea is not just to be found in the search, but to be found on page one of the search results.
There are many elements to SEO but your first step should be understanding how your target audience will search the web to find your business. The keyword is “Keywords.”
Write out a few keywords and phrases that best describe how you see a customer searching for your business online. Put these terms into the search engine to see the results and number of pages returned. Possibly include with your keywords and phrases the geographic location of your business which helps narrows the search results. Once you decide on your terms you will want to implement them on your website in the title, description and keyword tags. Using those keywords will be critical in those areas as well as in content on the site.
2. Social media isn’t a trend; it’s a way of life
Social media has changed the way people interact with one another. We no longer rely on talking about our likes or dislikes, instead we tweet it or post it. Then we comment on it and an entire discussion begins amongst friends and followers.
As a business, social media gives you a way to put information in front of your customers so you stay fresh in their mind. While social media is great for keeping your current customers informed of what’s going on, it’s even more important because of the viral nature of social media. When you engage with your customers through social media, you’re expanding your reach to their friends and their friends friends. Therefore people you normally wouldn’t reach or they wouldn’t think of looking for your products or services, you are now.
While starting a Facebook page or Twitter account is easy, I recommend that you first create a strategy on what you want to accomplish with social media. Whether your goal is to get more likes, capture leads, generate more business or all of the above, know what you want out of social media so you can work on the right tactics to make it happen.
3. Got News! Get out a press release
A press release tells the world about something important going on in your company. It can be about anything you feel is newsworthy, such as an important new hire, product release, product recall, event, whatever you want.
The main reason to do a press release is to get your business exposed to thousands of news outlets and all the major search engines. If any of those news outlets sees your press release they can choose to pick it up and they will distribute it on their website.
When writing your press release, use key terms and phrases where appropriate to help with your SEO. It improves your chances of your press release being found in a search engine. Don’t forget to include links back to your website and information about your company so consumers know how to find you.
4. Inbound marketing with link building
When another website has a link to your website, it improves your ranking on search engines and the chance of your business being found.
To start your link building find partners, suppliers, sponsors, customers, trade organizations or any other company that you do business with, and don’t be afraid to ask them to put a link to your site from theirs. Remember, sharing is caring. Position yourself that this would be an opportunity for both businesses and you can put a link to their website on yours as well.
5. Blogging along
Blogging provides a way for you to share your expertise by creating online articles that are relevant to your business. Readers can comment or start discussions on these articles. The idea is to have as many people return to your blog as possible, therefore creating a network of interested and potential customers. If you can demonstrate your expertise on a topic, other websites will want to link to your blog or articles, which helps your link building.
The length of your blog can be one paragraph, or several pages. When you write your blog remember who your audience is and use terms or phrases they can relate to. Also try to find ways to use your keywords or phrases to improve your SEO.
